The Wonder of Portable Apps

I have multiple devices at home that I use for a variety of purposes:

  • A Surface Book 2 which I use for illustration and general browsing/entertainment. This was also my daily driver throughout all of college. She's starting to show her age so I try not to use her much.
  • A Macbook Air 2018 for work. I have bootcamp set up, so I actually use Windows OS on this (Oops).
  • A PC made out of spare parts from my friend that I use for gaming, storing media like movies and music, and

I realized I wanted a way to work on my writing and creative endeavors pretty much anywhere I'm working. Ideally, one would have some sort of cloud-based solution for this, but I don't exactly have the know-how for this.

My solution--as unelegant as it is--is simply to carry around a 32GB USB with me with portableapps installed. I'm not very techy, despite how I present myself, so I wanted something that was easy to set up. This app's little launcher and the ease of installing programs onto it has dramatically improved my creative output.

I can open CuteMarkEd on any device with my files ready and just start writing. I pretty much only write in markdown unless I'm working on, say, a visual novel, I'll normally write that straight as Ren'py code to save time on formatting...
